Many of our patients have never been to an emergency veterinarian before, and that’s a good thing. We’re probably one of the only types of businesses that hopes you never have to use our services.

So, because many people have no experience with emergency veterinary care, they have a lot of questions about how it works and is different from going to their usual vet. We get that, and we want to help clear things up so you know exactly what to expect.

1. Does the emergency vet cost more?

Each situation is different, so it’s hard to make general statements about cost without knowing what’s wrong with your pet and what treatments are required. However, it’s important to keep in mind that emergency vets typically do have higher fees to cover the costs of having a specialized team, trained to treat accidents and emergencies, who works overnight, on weekends and holidays.

2. Do I need to make an appointment with the emergency vet?

No, you do not need to make an appointment. Just like the ER at a hospital, we’re here and ready to respond to walk-in patients who need us. And since there are no appointments, we triage our patients. That means we don’t choose who to see next based on they order in which they arrived, but the severity and urgency of their medical situation.

3. When are you open?

We are open from 7pm to 8am Monday through Friday and from 1pm on Saturday to 8am on Monday, and all major holidays.

4. Can I speak to someone before coming in?

Of course! We encourage you to call us during our normal hours of operation (see above) if you have any questions about your pet’s health. If you’re ever wondering if you might need to come in, just give us a call and we can help advise you on the best course of action

5. Do I need a referral?

No, we do not require referrals from your regular vet. Chances are your normal veterinarian is closed when you discover something is wrong. In that case, just come in right away and we will help. If your pet has an ongoing condition, however, your regular vet may recommend you come see us if anything happens during their off hours.

6. How will my regular vet know what you did?

We know your relationship with your usual veterinarian is important and part of our protocol is being them informed on your pet’s health. We will always fax them our records to keep them fully updated about any treatments.

7. What happens if my pet needs to stay at the emergency vet?

That’s absolutely fine. We are equipped to accommodate pets here while receiving or recovering from treatment. When that happens, we’ll keep you updated and allow you to visit as soon as possible.

8. Do emergency vets do euthanasia?

Yes, we can provide a peaceful and painless end to your pet’s life if that’s what’s needed. This could happen after an accident, but it could be that a long-time illness has reached a point where you think their pain levels are too high and it’s time to let them go. Whatever the reason, we’ll be here for you and allow you to be there for your pet in their last moments. We’ll allow you to take care of payment beforehand and take all the time you need to be alone with them.

9. How do I know my pet needs an emergency vet?

People usually choose to seek emergency veterinary care when they believe their pet’s life may be in danger. Check out our more in-depth blog on symptoms and conditions that require emergency care. And when in doubt, please don’t hesitate to call or come in. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your pet’s health.

10. What’s the best way to get in touch with Animal Emergency of Mokena?

During our off hours, please email us at info@animalemergencyofmokena.com. During the hours that we’re open, the best way to contact us is by phone: (708) 326-4800

11. Do you have payment plans?

We do not offer payments plans at this time. If your pet will stay here, we ask for a deposit when you leave them here and the balance payment when they are discharged. Please know that there will never be surprise costs though. We will always inform you and receive permission to pursue any treatment.

12. Do you accept pet insurance?

Yes, we do accept pet insurance. Whether or not the treatments required will be covered will depend on your pet’s situation and your individual insurance plan.

Any other questions we didn’t answer? Please don’t hesitate to get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.
